4 Tips for Preparing Your RV for Storage

Jul 28, 2022

When you're no longer using your recreational vehicle (RV) for adventures, it's time to start thinking about vehicle storage. Putting it away for an extended period takes some preparation to ensure it remains in good condition when not in use. If you're unsure where to start, use the following guide to learn how to store the RV.

How to Get an RV Ready for Storage

1. Drain Fluids

When a recreational vehicle is not in use, the water heater, tanks, and plumbing system are susceptible to freezing if liquids remain. This issue can then lead to further problems, such as leaks and burst lines.

To prevent such situations, empty and dispose of all nonvital fluids, including water, propane, and cooking oil. When storing for the long term, add a small amount of antifreeze to the piping, valves, and tanks. This measure will help avoid frozen liquids.

2. Clean It Out

A thorough cleaning both inside and out of the RV will ensure it stays in top shape. Pay special attention to areas that can collect moisture, such as the bathroom and kitchen. If they remain damp while in storage, mold and mildew may grow.

You should also remember to remove any food, food waste, and other perishables. Otherwise, the items will attract unwanted critters to the vehicle. To prevent extensive dust and grime accumulation on the RV's exterior, wash it with soap and water.

3. Disconnect Electronics

Disconnect all batteries from the RV, including the ones powering the smoke detectors. If the cells remain connected, they can drain and become damaged. As a result, you will need to replace all of them the next time you use the vehicle. You should also disconnect the RV's cell and hook it up to a battery tender so that it stays charged while in storage.

4. Find a Cover

Without a covering, an RV will get heavily exposed to sunlight, rainwater, and contaminants like dirt. Luckily, a tarp will shield it from the natural elements. This approach ensures that the vehicle's inside and outside won't have extensive dust buildup, preventing it from needing a deep wash when it gets taken out of the vehicle storage facility.
